Saturday, Jan 2nd at the Market: Welcome in 2010 with Healthy Foods, Healthy Drinks, Healthy Skin Care

January is the time we all start thinking about our health and losing weight and looking younger and staying healthy. Make your first commitment of the year be to building a healthy foundation by eating the healthiest foods for you and for the planet. Buy local, organically produced foods! And this weekend as part of the Local Foods, Local Chef’s Series Heather Flournoy of www.KatonahGreen.com will be sharing some recipes for immune boosting winter drinks, and we’ll have a special guest…. Annmarie Gianni of the Renegade Health Show (and Kevin too!) sharing some samples of her new organic skin care line.

We are so lucky to have Madura Farms supply produce year-round at our market! They grow vegetables, exotic mushrooms including the immune boosting maitakes, and herbs in rich soil in the black dirt region of NY, in hoop houses and greenhouses, so we can have fresh produce in January (brrr…) And New England Farms gives supplies us with grass-fed meats, eggs and maple syrup all winter, and Guy Hodges supplies us with raw local honey.

There will be lots of other vendors there, including Renee’s Jams, (these are really special and unusual jams like jalapeno apricot, quince and persimmon…yum!), Go-Go’s organic coffee and soups, and Wave-Hill artisan breads. If the weather cooperates for fishing days, we’ll have fresh-caught fish and seafood from Seatuck.

Local Guys Cook Local Foods! Cooking demo, Sat, December 12, South Salem

Local Guys Cook Local Foods! Cooking demo at Gossett’s Indoor Farmer’s Market, Saturday, December 12th from 10-12:30.

This week’s real guy cooking is Max Barry, a personal fitness trainer from Danbury. He’s going to cook us  grilled sweet potatoes, grass fed beef and sauteed kale.

Max says “I like to keep it simple, clean and local. Just a little salt, pepper and olive oil, and good quality basics and it’s gonna be good. I’ve actually been developing a Spice Rub blend, that I came up with because I was eating too much salt. So in the process of finding one I liked, I got creative. I’ve ended up with a blend that just isn’t available in a store, so you can try it out this weekend.”

You can check out Max’s fitness site at http://www.nu-fit.net or follow him on Twitter @Nu_Fit

An essential part of the demo series is YOU! We want your questions on food, health, and cooking. Our goal is that you walk away inspired to cook with real foods and feel a connection to the producers. And of course we want you to stick around for samples of the foods created by our cooks!
