If your feeling a little sluggish or somewhat drained, just spend a few moments this Saturday with Den Gorman. She has an amazing story and her positive outlook is contagious. When her husband, Pete, was diagnosed with acute lymbostic leukemia and given a 25 percent chance of survival, Deb says she dropped to the floor. In August 2007 Peter received a stem cell transplant at the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts. His brother, Bill was his donor and saved his life! In the process, his blood type changed from A-positive to B-positive.

Seeing how important stem-cell transplants are, Deb Gorman found a new passion: She started a company called, appropriately, B+, which makes jewelry and T-shirts, a portion of the proceeds go to the Stem Cell/ Bone Marrow Transplant programs at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Heavy Guage Tomato Cage

Heavy Gauge Tomato Cage. (Say that 3 times fast!)

It’s kinda hard to get excited about a tomato cage, but allot of folks who see these heavy duty tomato cages are doing just that. These guys will hold up your tomato plants even if the tomatoes get as big as a watermelon! They have been flying out of the Nursery all week, and people have been commenting on how finally, someone has done a tomato cage right!

Hand Rakes

Ok these guys are not to win any awards for making in the fashion statement department. And there is a chance that your neighbors will look at you funny, but these Hand Rakes work. A customer requested them a few weeks back and we got some extra to use when we tidy up the Nursery. They work pretty good, and are great for small jobs or those tight corners where a rake just wont fit.

We got a new tools into the Nursery this week, they are Pro-Lite tools from Radius Garden. These tool include Bulb Auger’s and Plant Transplanter’s. They are heavy duty, made of quality materials, professional grade and very ergonomic. We have use them out in the field for a few days and, so far, they are living up to their reputation.

So come and get energized this Saturday at the Market and all weekend long at the Nursery. If nothing above has appealed to you, then come down on a Sunday (when the Nursery is a little quilter) and just stroll around to see a sampling of what nature has to offer. Have you ever seen a unsettled month like this May? From bone chilling nights and gusty winds that would bring back bad memories to both Dorothy and Toto, to soaking rains that would make Ark building a worth while hobby, May has been a tough month on both us and the plant life here at the Nursery.

But as cantankerous as Mother Nature can be, I think she May smile on us this Saturday and let a little sun shine on the Market. Temperatures are going to be in the upper 60′s on Saturday and it will be a bit breezey. While the Merry Month of May May-be a bit fickle, the vendors at the Farmers Market are rock solid, they are here every week to bring you the best in local, organic farm-fresh food. Kathy Rothfeld started Kasaro Designs five years ago after learning the craft of fine jewelry design while working for a distinguished jeweler. Her designs have been featured in fine jewelry shops from Larchmont to Mt. Kisco. She personally sources unique elements, and often applies proprietary processes, adding subtle hues and creating distinctive finishes. This Saturday is “THE Saturday” at Gossett Brothers Nursery. Besides the Farmers Market, Gossett Brothers is privileged to once again host the annual Mothers Day weekend fundraiser for the Lewisboro Garden Club. If their was ever a time to come in and get your garden questions answered, this would be it. On Saturday all the members of the Lewisboro Garden club will be working with the Gossett staff to help you choose the best annual, perennial, shrub or tree. Its a once a year event that is not to be missed.

Traditionally, this is one of the busiest weekends of the summer season and all week long we has been receiving deliveries. The Nursery is stocked to the gills with a great selection of plants. So whatever you are looking for, come on in this Saturday and browse every nook and cranny of the Nursery with the members of the Lewisboro Garden Club to find some of the best of natures offerings.

The Lewisboro Garden club is also sponsoring a bake sale on Saturday. Homemade pies, cakes, cookies and other tempting treats will be on sale. One of the great services that the Lewisboro Garden Club provides to the community is the “Golden Roads” program. This program, which has been a great success for the past 4 years, encourages homeowners and businesses to line their properties with daffodils. The Garden Club coordinates mass plantings of daffodils along public roadways and this year they will plant thousands of daffodils in front of the stone wall along Elmwood Road at Onatru Farm, Lewisboro Hamlet. You can help support the Golden Roads program, and help beatify our town roads. Just ask any of the Lewisboro Garden Club folks

But wait there is more!! This weekend is also the annual bee pickup weekend! Guy Hodges, our resident bee-keeper will be getting his annual delivery of bees. Several thousand bees will be visiting Gossett Brothers Nursery this Saturday. Guy will be keeping all his buzzing friends way in the back of the Gossett property, so no need to get nervous if you’re bee shy. If you are coming to pick up your bees on Saturday, follow the signs to the back of the Gossett property and you will find Guy and your bees waiting for you.

So needless to say, with the Farmers Market, the Lewisboro Garden Club fundraiser and the annual bee pickup all happening on the same day, the Nursery is going to be packed. The staff at Gossett’s has put in an extra effort all this week getting the Nursery ready for this weekend (we don’t need a gym!), and the place looks simply amazing!! The annuals have arrived, the herbs and vegetables are out, and everywhere you turn you are greeted with color and variety that shows the graceful and endless beauty of nature. We are so lucky to have an local fundraiser like the Lewisboro Garden Club come to the Nursery, and to have dedicated farmers who travel hours to bring you the best in farm-freash food. We hope you enjoy your time at the Gossett’s Farm Market here at Gossett’s Brothers Nursery as much as we enjoy bringing the best of nature to you. Bust out the summer shirts and shorts!! No need to worry this Saturday, because it’s gonna be sunny with temps in the lower 80′s. The plants at the Nursery are loving it! Everything is blooming, flowering and welcoming the warm May days with great color and scents. Just like Gossett Nursery, Gossett’s Farm Market is full of color and great aromas, from the “wake-you-up-and-get-you-gogo-going” locally brewed aroma of Go-Go Pops coffee to the vibrant colors of farm fresh vegetables from Madera Farms, you’ll find a healthy selection of food, drink and local crafts waiting for you.

Local Artisan

This Saturday, besides a full house of vendors, we have a local artisan. Amy Handler will be here this Saturday and she is bringing the wisdom of Blockologie with her. Blockoloegie, according to Amy, is defined as the study of life, love, art and nature on a block.

Amy believes that design should look good and feel good in your hands. Her wooden blocks are handcrafted with beautiful images and words to inspire or make you smile on each of the six sides. These make a great paperweight, desktop conversation piece or decorative touch for your home or office. Looking For a meaningful gift for someone special in your life? Think outside the blocks!

Her mission is to create something beautiful that also helps to bring beauty to the world. Part of the proceeds of each of the blocks will go to charitable organizations such as CamFed and the Somaly Mam Foundation which help to improve the lives of young women.

We have a free gardening class, a guest chef, a local Artisan, a special “swap” event and specials from both Gossett’s Nursery and our Gossett’s Farm Market vendors. Sounds interesting? Free Gardening 101 Class – 1:00 to 3:00 pm

Shrubs: The Backbone of the Home Landscape. Melissa, our resident garden expert and plant buyer for Gossetts Nursery, will discuss how to best use shrubs in boulders and foundation plantings.

Take a guided tour of the Nursery’s wonderful shrubs collection and jot down some ideas for new and interesting additions to your home landscape. Their will be plenty of time for some Q&A at the end of the class. No need to pre-register, just pop in and enjoy the time with Melissa.

Chef Demo

Deborah Nelson is coming back to the Market as our guest chef. Debbie will take ingredients from the Market and cook up something special, healthy and fun. It’s the first chef demo of the spring and its going to be delicious! Jaja Requa, who graduated from Parsons in 1999 with an A.A.S in fashion design and then went on to design for Bugle Boy and Yves Saint-Luarent, is bringing her exciting fashions for both adults and kids to the Market.

Special Event – Garden Tool Swap

Its another first for the Market! Here is a great idea and depending on how good this one goes, we would like to plan several more “swap” events. Here is how it works, gather up your gently used garden tools, the ones you don’t need and bring them to the Market to share, trade or barter for something you need.

Sharpen your bargaining skills and come trade with your neighbors and make new friends. Gossett Brothers Nursery will donate a pack of organic seeds to everyone who trades at the event. You can find more information at The Katonah Green Calendar.

I think our vendors must of worked for the post office in a past life, because no matter what kind of wild weather April brings, they always get here and get the job done. We started off the month with a bang, amazing sunny skies and warm days, but then reality set back in and last Saturday we were blown around and just barely warm. This Saturday looks like its goona be a wet, cool one, but not to worry, our ‘cold-hardened” farmers have some specials for you, to help entice you to come and play in the rain.

Picklelicious is putting there Half Sour Pickles on sale for $5.00 a quart, reg. price $7.00.

Cascade Mountain is happy to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day 2010 with a newly released batch of California Certified Organic Olive Oil….this oil of a Spanish origin and is grown, crushed and packed on one 1800 acre parcel in the Upper Sacramento Valley, it has a tremendous fruity nose,never bitter and very pleasing as a finish oil The special this week only is $11.00 for 375 mll and $19.00 for the 750s…so enjoy and decrease your dependancy on foreign oil!!!

Madera Farms is bringing some asparagus, fresh (green) garlic stalks, maybe some rhubarb, sorrel along with there usual fantastic greens. Finally Wave Hill Breads will have lots and lots of “Just Crusts” chips, always a crowd favorite.

We also have a Local Artisan this Saturday. Dorothy Jagodzinski, who is the talent behind “Creative Crafts by Dorothy”, is sharing that talent by bringing her handmade Aprons, Table Runners, Tote Bags, Jewlery and more to the Market. What a week! First we get as much rain in day as we do in a month, but then the reward, amazing temperatures, blue skies and the feeling of spring in the air — finally!

This week the Market is outside again and we can’t wait! The Market is introducing a new vendor this week, Pampered Cow Creamery. Pampered Cow offers amazing cheeses from grass fed cows. We also have three unique events this Saturday. First, its our very first household battery recycle Saturday. Bring your HOUSEHOLD batteries to Gossetts Nursery and dump them in the battery recycle box provided. Household batteries include both alkaline and nickel-cadmium batteries, so that includes non-rechargeables like AAA, AA, C, D, and 9 volt batteries, and rechargeable batteries.

Second Gossetts Farm Market is hosting representatives from Community Energy. Community Energy specializes in renewable energy. Local representatives Sam and Mark will be there to answer questions.

Third, we have another local artisan coming to the Market. Tammy Fischetti-Belle will bring her Fleur-Cut Flowers and floral arrangements. They will make a great holiday gift for that special someone or dress your home or dining room table with some of Tammy’s beautiful arrangements.

Seatuck Seafood will not be here this weekend. Long Island reveived over 7 inches of rain this week and the Department of Environmental Conservation suspended shellfish operations due to the extraordinary volume of storm water runoff caused by heavy rainfall. Rob will be back next Saturday.

The Market is outside this Saturday, despite the wee-nip in the air. This week the Gossetts Farm Market welcomes a new vendor from across the river. Mama Earth, from Nyack is setting up this week brining you organic, wheat or egg free deserts. Mama Earth offers cupcakes, mini tortes, cinnamon walnut coffeecake, chocolate orange bundt cake, chocolate pudding tarts, lemon tarts, blueberry cornmeal tarts , carrot cake, coconut cake – all organic and no trans fats or fructose syrups.
